The name HeadWaters was chosen for the regional land trust in northeast Michigan because our eleven-county region sits on an upland covered in deep glacial till that absorbs snowmelt and rain to release it slowly and steadily, as cold spring water, into the headwaters of the rivers and streams of the region. These streams include several world-class trout streams like the Black, Manistee, Muskegon, Pigeon, Sturgeon, Thunder Bay, and the legendary AuSable.
These waters flow across huge areas of northern Michigan before joining with lakes Michigan and Huron, and are our region's most defining feature. Protecting these waters and the lands through which they flow is what we do 365 days a year.
We invite you to join us in protecting all of the special places in northeast Michigan for the enjoyment of all generations to come.
HeadWaters Land Conservancy's office is located in the Otsego County city of Gaylord, 45 minutes south of the Mackinac Bridge on Interstate 75.
